Simmons Mattress CompanyProducing Quality Bedding Since 1870Simmons Mattress Company has become a household name when it comes to sleeping products. Since 1870, a full 139 years ago, Simmons has been a trusted name in the industrial world of mattress manufacture. They've been around longer than any other brand. For a complete run down on their current product line see Simmons Mattress Reviews. Company HistoryIt was in the 1870s that Zalmon G. Simmons began to mass produce woven wire mattresses in his factory. The decision to switch over from making cheese boxes marked the start of his success. Prior to this all mattresses were made by hand and were very expensive. In 1889 they further refined the manufacturing process enabling them to sell them very cheaply. When the price dropped from $12 to 95 cents it was the first time mattresses really became available to almost anyone who wanted one. It was also in 1889 that they first started using spiral coil innersprings. In 1900 they patented a wrapped coil spring which was great for use in mattresses but it had to be made by hand so it cost too much to be practical. They launched the Wall-A-Bed product in 1912 which was very successful. By 1919 the company had manufacturing plants all over North America in both the United States and Canada. In 1925 the company developed one of their biggest innovations - the Pocketed Coil Spring. It was the same idea that they had in 1900 but it finally became practical when one of their engineers invented a machine that could produce them quickly and efficiently. They introduced what was to become their most well known product that year - the Simmons Beautyrest mattress. It used the new springs as the method of support and was a huge hit. In 1931 the company commissioned one of the first scientific studies of sleep, recording people sleeping through the night. The study found that most people changed position over 35 times during a typical eight hour sleeping period. The research was used to develop more comfortable beds. In 1941 they joined the war effort and switched their factories over to producing weapons and supplies for the troops. 1995 was when they first produced the Simmons Back Care mattress which provided comfortable support in 5 different body zones while helping to keep the spine in alignment. In 2000 they produced mattresses that didn't need to be rotated or flipped to mark the 75th anniversary of the Simmons Beautyrest. In 2004 they developed their HealthSmart mattress which features a removable cover that can be washed just like the rest of your bedding. It makes an excellent choice for allergy sufferers. Simmons TodaySimmons Mattress Company has been constantly improving the quality of their offerings, applying technological advances in the manufacturing process in order to cater to what the people want. The business has also been expanding over the decades, with the company now owning 18 manufacturing plants in the United States and Puerto Rico, with an additional 23 international licensees and sub-licensees. Today they are the ones responsible for Beautyrest, Beautyrest Black, Natural Care, ComforPedic, and Simmons Kids. They've become one of the largest bedding manufacturers in the world. With such a long and storied history you can be sure that they produce quality sleep sets. A Simmons mattress is made and guaranteed to ensure a good night's sleep. |
