Beginner's Mattress Buying Guide

Sleep Number Bed Complaints

Out of those who posted Sleep Number Bed complaints, the overwhelming majority mention price as the main reason.

Many of these people probably expected an unbelievable sleep but the truth is that while a bed can make you more comfortable, it can't change your sleep patterns.

Due to the price of the bed, these people may have been expecting something unrealistic and this has caused them to be upset.

Since this concept is relatively new, it's going to be more expensive than other beds for the time being. It's similar to high definition televisions being more expensive than traditional models.

At the same time however, when people are spending a lot of money they do deserve an excellent product. At the very least it should be no less comfortable than your previous bed. If it is, we suggest you take advantage of the in-home tryout period and return it.

Discount Sleep Number Mattresses

Unlike most mattress retailers, the company has a strict no-haggling policy. So you can't go into a Select Comfort outlet and negotiate a better price. Discount Sleep Number mattresses are available however, because their stores have sales regularly. You can often find a Select Comfort sale going on at their official website as well. Do your research before going to the store and don't let the salespeople talk you into buying a more expensive model.

We also found in Select Comfort reviews that some people reported feeling like they were sleeping on a cheap air mattress for camping. We believe this will only be noticeable with the less expensive models which come with very little cushioning between you and the air chambers. For this reason we recommend not buying anything lower than their mid-level products.

Sleep Number Bed Complaints - The Great Divide

One of the most often heard Sleep Number Bed complaints is that it's not good for cuddling because there's an uncomfortable ridge in the middle of the bed when pressure is lowered. This is caused by the foam divider which separates the two air chambers. People also say that it creates a trench in the middle of the bed when it's fully inflated.

This is only an issue with the dual air chamber models. They're also available in single chamber models but then you can't adjust the two sides independently, there's just one setting for the whole mattress.

Sleep Number Bed Leaks

Another complaint people made was that their Sleep Number bed leaks. Basically, you're sleeping on pockets of air which, over time can slowly begin to deflate and cause problems. Sometimes it's just a matter of reinflating the mattress a little bit every few days. Other times you may need a new air pump which doesn't seem to last very long.

There's also been strange reports of the Select Comfort remote developing a mind of it's own and changing the sleep number at random times. It would probably get annoying having to constantly reset your comfort level. However, people have said that when they called customer service the company quickly sent replacement parts to fix the problem. So, it appears they do honor their 20 year warranty.

Sleep Number Bed Complaints - Warranty Coverage

One thing to be aware of is that the warranty is pro-rated after 2 years. A lot of people miss this because it's in the fine print. The salespeople won't go out of their way to make you aware of it either. Finding this out after their bed breaks down tends to really make people angry and it's one of the most common causes of Sleep Number Bed complaints.

If you've owned the mattress more than two years you'll have to pay for parts but it won't be full price. Also, the company doesn't service the beds. If you aren't willing to do the repair work yourself then you'll pay a hefty fee for each service call.

Select Comfort Mold Problems

A few years ago a significant number of customers experienced Select Comfort mold problems. It seems that certain models were creating a perfect environment for mold growth inside the mattress. Again, most people haven't had difficulties with their warranty coverage.

Customer service appears to be sending out free replacement parts right away that take care of it because it's considered a health hazard. But you still have to take the bed apart, replace the components and then reassemble the whole thing yourself. We believe that the mold problem has been addressed in their current designs and is no longer an issue.

Summing up, there's really a lot to think about when it comes to purchasing one of these mattresses. Some people say that the ability to buy replacement parts for their bed is great because they'll never have to purchase a whole new bed again. Others consider it a curse and don't want to have to worry about their bed breaking down the same way their car does.

If you're willing to do the work on it yourself you could save a lot of money in the long run. However if you're not a very handy person you may want to think twice about purchasing one of these complicated beds. You might end up being one of those angry people posting Sleep Number Bed complaints on the Internet.
